Have you said any or all of these statements?
"Online learning isn't the same as the real thing."
"I tried online and it didn't work for me."
"My music teacher can't explain stuff to me clearly online."
My answer? "Clearly, you had the wrong teacher."
One thing has become transparently clear during this pandemic: Online lessons are the way to go now. And more and more music teachers are waking up to that realization. However, not everyone is doing it right. And when I say everyone, I mean not just the teacher, but also the student.
So how do you make an online experience work? How do you successfully overcome any challenges that you may face with online learning? It's true an experienced teacher can really make an online experience work, but a lot falls on you as the student as well.
Here are 6 things you can do:
1. Make sure you position your device camera in such a way that your music teacher can see you clearly. That way, if you make a mistake, they can correct you quickly.
2. Make sure you're in a well lit room. Don't make your camera face a window, as this darkens the image on the teachers side, making it difficult to see you.
3. Make sure that you are in a quiet room for your lesson so that you are not disturbed or distracted by anything or anyone else.
4. Make sure that you are well prepared beforehand. This includes any practicing and having all your books, gear and other items for your lesson ready. Remember, even though you're at home, as soon as your lesson starts, that becomes your place of learning.
5. Be disciplined. Make sure you are on time for your lessons and work your hardest to practice any work your teacher gives you so that you continue growing. Don't let other things distract you from adhering to your practice routine. If necessary, set reminders in your phone.
6. Finally, if you are battling to understand something, let your teacher know immediately so that they can make arrangements to send you any videos or study information that will help give you a clear answer to your question.
